Lee Collins Top 10 Must-Have Mac App List

A lot of people recently have been asking me about my switch to Mac and how things are going. In a word - AWESOME! I love my MacBook and I don't see myself EVER going back to a Windows-based machine. The entire experience has been incredible - from having a computer that WORKS, to the exceptional support, to, well... EVERYTHING. And once you have your Mac you will want to outfit it with the coolest apps - right?

So here's a short list of my Top 10 recommended Mac apps (in no particular order):

Jing – yes, you should install and love jing for making short screen capture movies :-) http://www.jingproject.com/ Growl - Growl lets Mac OS X applications unobtrusively tell you when things happen. I have mine setup to display in a semi-transparent box in the top right of my screen. http://growl.info/ Hidden - the cheapest and most advanced theft recovery solution for your Mac http://hiddenapp.com (normally $20, only $10 with code TUAW50) Audacity – free audio editor and recorder http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Skype – so we can chit-chat homie http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/ Disk Inventory X - shows what files takes up how much space (similar to Sequoia for Windows) http://www.derlien.com/ Firefox - the best web browser around in my opinion http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/ Gimp - free image editing program (free alternative to Photoshop) http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html Monolingual – I don’t speak Portugese, so why should my Mac? (save disk space by deleting unnecessary languages) http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/ MacJanitor - cleans up various system files & stuff to keep your Mac running smoothly http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/downloads.html

So that's my list...

President Obama states “The Entrepreneur” is THE Answer

"The weight of this crisis will not determine the destiny of this nation. The answers to our problems don't lie beyond our reach.

They exist in our laboratories and our universities; in our fields and our factories; in the imaginations of our entrepreneurs and the pride of the hardest-working people on Earth.

Those qualities that have made America the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history we still possess in ample measure.

What is required now is for this country to pull together, confront boldly the challenges we face, and take responsibility for our future once more."

(Source: Transcript of President Obama's speech to Congress, 24 February, 2009)

Did I read this right?  Did the President of the United States of America just tell Congress and the American people that we had to actually take responsibility for our futures? Really?  And has hell frozen over too? Let me first be honest and share that I did not vote for President Obama.  I don't want to waste our precious time discussing reasons and perspectives for how we voted. Rather, I want to applaud a man for taking such a non-politically correct stance as to say that we not only are responsible for our futures - but that we actually must step up and take back control in our lives to bring our country back to the greatness it has historically represented.

Entrepreneurs and rebels built this country. It was our forefathers imagination that envisioned a world without tyranny and it was the American "get it done" attitude that is responsible for the industrial and economic revolution that was felt around the world. Sadly, in recent years the Entrepreneur has been demonized by the victim oriented class warfare rhetoric spouted from so many of our elected officials. The same rhetoric that is used to brain wash us into a follower mentality dependent on our Government for our very lifely hood. Many fellow Americans have fallen right into this vote buying mind trap. And I don't feel that it is totally the public's fault for curtailing to this load of bullshit. When you are inundated by a biased and agenda driven media 24 hours a day, even the strongest of us will begin to doubt our beliefs. But there is hope! We have a newly elected President who used the very marketing tactics that successful Entrepreneurs are using in their business every day.

What better way to honor the very economic cornerstone of our country than to successfully use the marketing tactics and strategies of the entrepreneur to become the President of the United States? Come on, President Obama didn't do anything original.  He just used all of the great, proven marketing strategies that are out there. His team used social media (My Space, Twitter and Face book) to connect in a non-intrusive way to the multi-media driven masses that we have become.  And they sprinkled in the tried and true Direct Mail strategies to reach us via our mailboxes and other offline means. TV, radio, phone broadcast messages, social media, direct mail - this man used every possible marketing tactic out there to get elected. <<Hybrid Marketing anyone?>> He kept us posted on all of his latest platforms, but more importantly he tapped into the emotional need of the country. We needed to be inspired, we needed hope and we needed a fresh face that spoke to us in the way we wanted to be spoken to.  And he delivered. <<Remember, people invest with their emotions and justify this decision later with logic.  Brilliant strategy.>> Don't you think that if President Obama was able to use these techniques and strategies to attain the highest level of personal achievement in the world, that you could use these same strategies to be successful in your own business?

Seems pretty damn do-able when you put it in that perspective, doesn't it?

"Now, if we're honest with ourselves, we'll admit that for too long, we have not always met these responsibilities -- as a government or as a people. I say this not to lay blame or to look backwards, but because it is only by understanding how we arrived at this moment that we'll be able to lift ourselves out of  this predicament." I couldn't have said it better myself.  It's time to take back control and be responsible for ourselves and our country. Get over all of the bumps in the road, the job lay offs and even failures. It's time to cowboy up and take back control of our futures.  It can be done...with the imagination and courage of the Entrepreneur. Now I know, I can already hear your mind talking back a little... "Sure President Obama had a great marketing campaign - cause he had a whole team of folks with the know how and experience to take him to his desired end result." Well, yea.  Absolutely.

I am in no way trying to tell you that you have to do any of this on your own.  Far from it.

You just need to get hooked up with a super star team like President Obama's marketing team, right? Wouldn't that make it all much easier? Well, hell, that's easy. There's a team of marketing experts coming together in Las Vegas at the end of March.  Experts in Social Media, Pay Per Click, Direct Mail, Video marketing, blogs and much more. All you have to do is get there and the rest will fall into place - just like it did for President Obama.

"The weight of this crisis will not determine the destiny of this nation." And is not the fate of our own economic future. "...the imaginations of our entrepreneurs and the pride of the hardest-working people on Earth" is still alive.  We can show the world that we roll over for no one.  We as Americans are worthy of leading the rest of the world. In the very words of our President, the Imagination of the Entrepenuer will lead us out of darkness once again. Isn't it time we all faced up to our responsibility to get our own lives back on track and get this country back to the economic giant of yester-year? Yep - I think so too. See you in Vegas. http://www.rockstarplatinumlive.com/marketingshow.html

Response to Reader Email: “Our Results Aren’t Typical”

We get the most interesting emails. For example, we recently had a reader send us a long, ranting email about how he felt our disclaimer (and other marketer's disclaimers) stating "our results aren't typical" is unfair because it set him up for failure. I disagree. In fact, I believe with a small shift in mindset he will see that "our results aren't typical" statement actually sets him up for success. Here's what I mean: On a scale of 1-10, it has been proven statistically that 9 out of 10 businesses fail. In reality, when we use a larger scale of 1-100, roughly 95% of businesses will fail in the first two years according to the Small Business Administration. You can Google the results yourself if you feel so inclined. Think about that for a second. Ninety-five percent (95%). That's an awfully BIG number. And an average 95% failure rate within the first two years is the typical result. You can probably see where I'm going here... So, "our results aren't typical". It's true. And that's a good thing. Scratch that - it's a GREAT thing! Why in the world would you EVER want to learn how to build a business from people who only gets "typical" results? Typical results are a 95% failure rate. Is that what you want? To stack the cards so heavily against yourself that you only expect to succeed a meager 5% of the time? Now, we could go all into mindset and how this person is unconsciously sabotaging himself for failure - but we'll save that rant for another day. The point here is you SHOULD be learning from people who get ABOVE AVERAGE RESULTS. Right? I mean, you don't really want to learn from some dude (or dudette) who fails 95% of the time DO YOU? I know I don't. So, next time you're trying to find an excuse for why you can't succeed DON'T blame it on us... because "our results aren't typical". I'd love to hear your thoughts - please comment below.
